Derrick Walker, president of competition and operations for IndyCar, willresign at the end of the season to pursue other opportunities, series chief executive Mark Miles said Thursday.

Walker, a 70-year-old Scotsman who began his auto racing career in 1970 as a chief mechanic for the Brabham Formula One team owned by Bernie Ecclestone, has held the IndyCar post since May of 2013.

"I believe the timing is right to move on to other opportunities," said Walker, who gave no other details but also owns a sports car team.

Three races remain in the IndyCar season, starting Sunday at Mid-Ohio with an August 23 oval race at Pocono and the season-ender August 30 at Sonoma, California. Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya, a former F1 racer, owns the points lead by 445-403 over American Graham Rahal.

Walker led innovations on new aerodynamic packages for IndyCars, helped launch the Indianapolis Grand Prix road race last year and establish a street race in Boston starting in 2016.

"We have benefited from Derrick`s extensive racing experience, his tireless effort and his passion for IndyCar and he will be missed," Miles said.
