Updated on : 17 November 2016

Director Leninbharathi's 'Merku Thodarchi Malai' is yet to hit screens but the film has already won an award at a film fest.

The film was recently awarded the Best Cinematography award at the recent Bioscope Global Film Festival in Punjab. Speaking about the film cinematographer Theni Eswar, tells "In addition to regional films from around the country.

The festival also had films from countries like Iran and Romania. Around 250 films from around the world were screened at this event, and I'm glad that our film was selected for its cinematography from among those."

Talking about his work in the film, the cinematographer says that it was challenging because MTM isn't like a typical feature film. "You could call this alternative cinema. Most of the artistes who have acted are daily wage workers from the region — the border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

To make them feel less conscious about the camera, we decided to do away with artificial lights, and have shot the film almost entirely using natural light," he says. He adds that it was only for a few scenes that happen during the night that he used artificial light and that too, to only enhance what is visible to the naked eye.

"I used lights that are available in such a rural region — like the lights they use for wedding processions and the electric bulbs that they use in that place," he says. Even for rain effects, the unit used local fire service personnel, he reveals.
