Chennai multiplexes Goes Strike Against GST From Today
Updated on : 04 October 2017

Chennai multiplexes like PVR and INOX have gone on strike from today.

The move is against the additional local body entertainment tax (LBET-10%) which has been imposed by the Chennai Corporation.

This is in additional to the GST (28 %) imposed by the Central government. For films of other languages, the local tax is 20%.

The Multiplex Association of India(MAI) says that the double taxation only upsets the GST model and is against a the principle 'One Nation... One Tax'.

It also believes that the double taxation affects the film industry. While PVR and INOX have gone on strike from today, multiplexes like SPI Cinemas have said that they will take a call on the same after discussions with the Tamil Nadu Theater Owners Association.
